What is paintless dent repair?
Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is a specialized technique used to remove minor dents from a vehicle’s body without the need for sanding, fillers, or painting. It’s an ideal solution for:
- Small, shallow dents
- Dings without paint damage
- Hail damage
- Door dings
Rather than altering or covering up damage, PDR works by gently reshaping the metal from behind the panel. Technicians use a combination of specialized rods, lights, and techniques to slowly work the dent back to its original shape.
Because the process doesn’t involve repainting, your vehicle maintains its original factory finish—and its resale value.
Does PDR work for all types of dents?
Not all dents are suitable for paintless repair. Here’s how we handle those cases:
- If the paint is cracked, chipped, or stretched, traditional dent repair may be required.
- Dents located on sharp body lines or edges are harder to access and may not come out fully with PDR.
- If the metal has been creased or if previous bodywork was done in the same area, results may vary.
At Budds’ Collision, we always provide an honest evaluation. If PDR isn’t possible, we’ll recommend the next best repair option—whether that’s conventional dent repair, panel replacement, or touch-up paint. And yes, we can handle all of that in-house too.

Can insurance cover paintless dent repair?
Many insurance policies do cover PDR—especially if the damage was caused by events like hailstorms, minor collisions, or vandalism.
Because PDR is a cost-effective and non-invasive method of repairing dents, insurance companies often prefer it over traditional bodywork that involves sanding, filling, and repainting.
If you’re filing a comprehensive or collision claim, PDR may be fully or partially covered depending on your policy’s terms and deductible. In many cases, the cost of PDR falls below the deductible threshold, meaning it’s sometimes faster and easier to pay out of pocket.
Whether or not you decide to file a claim, we’ll give you a clear breakdown of costs and options—no surprises.
